If your Garlands wind up all tangled in storage, reusing them next Christmas would be super difficult. But you can avoid all that trouble by storing your Christmas garland properly. I recommend four main ways to store Christmas garlands: in plastic containers, in hat boxes, in garland bags, and with clothes hangers.
Best Storage Containers for Christmas Garland
The container in which you store your garland plays the most vital role in keeping it untangled. While there are many options, they all have a common feature: ample space. The larger the space the storage container offers per garland, the lower the likelihood of tangling.
That being said, the following are some storage containers for Christmas garlands:
- Large Plastic Containers (I use these here): This offers a large amount of space and is a great option for storing multiple large garlands. If you intend to store your garlands in a large plastic container, you should ensure the container is at least as long as half the length of your longest garland. In other words, if your longest garland is 3 feet long, the plastic container should be at least 1.5 feet long.
- Hat Box: This hat box can be of use when storing a few units of small garlands.
- Garland Storage Bags: Of course, these are tailor-made for garlands, so they work seamlessly. The downside is that you can only store one garland per bag. Storage could also be time-consuming. But then, the garlands get enough room to themselves, so there is no tangling.
- Clothes Hangers: These clothes hangers work just like garland storage bags. So, their upsides and downsides are pretty similar to garland storage bags.
How to Store Christmas Garland in Large Plastic Containers

Step 1: Detach the Garlands and Remove the Decorations on Them
Start by detaching the garlands from walls, doors, trees, and other places you attached them. Then remove ribbons and every other ornamentation of each garland.
Step 2: Gently Lay the Garlands in the Container
Open the large plastic container, then fold each garland in half and lay them flat in it. Ensure you lay each garland in the same direction. In other words, the folding arc of each garland should be on the same side, while the free ends should be on the other side.
Repeat until you have laid all the garlands in the container. Ensure you do not squeeze the garlands together.
Step 3: Cover the Garlands in Something to Keep Them Dry
Once you have all the garlands in the container, lay some newspaper over them to keep them dry. In place of newspaper, you may use bubble wrap, tissue paper, or a large plastic bag.
Keeping the garlands dry while in storage reduces the likelihood of damage. So, prioritize this.
Step 4: Place the Container in an Ideal Storage Spot
Cover the container and place it in a cool, dry spot.
Note: You can store small garlands in a hat box following the same steps.
How to Store Christmas Garland With a Garland Storage Bag or Clothes Hanger
This is pretty straightforward:
- Gently place one garland around the shoulder of a storage bag/clothes hanger.
- Zip the storage bag (or clothes hanger bag) accordingly.
- Hook the storage bag/clothes hanger in a cool, dry spot.
- Repeat steps 1-3 until you’ve stored all your garlands.
